Google has announced plans to establish a massive AI data center campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma, marking a significant $3 billion investment into the area. This ambitious project will span 400 acres at the intersection of Perkins and Richmond Roads. Discussions about this groundbreaking initiative began in July 2024, with more details provided in a draft economic development plan from August 2024. The plan outlines that each data center building will be approximately 300,000 square feet and constructed across multiple phases.

This remarkable project highlights a strong collaborative effort among the city of Stillwater, local stakeholders, and the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Will Joyce has emphasized that Google’s decision to build in Stillwater is a positive reflection on the city’s economy, skilled workforce, and commitment to community development. The strategic location and the city’s supportive environment make it an ideal spot for Google’s latest venture into AI technologies.

Economic Impact and Community Collaboration

Google’s newly announced AI data center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, will enjoy a property tax exemption as part of a tax incentive deal. In return, Google will make direct payments to support local public schools, Meridian Technology Center, Payne County government, and health services. This initiative is designed to strengthen local public services and facilities, showing the advantage of corporate investment in community development. The first phase alone is poised to contribute nearly $900,000, improving educational infrastructure and other community services.

Although there isn’t a specific timeline for construction, this expansion complements Google’s existing data center operations in Pryor, Oklahoma, which have been growing since 2011. It is expected to enhance Google’s data processing capabilities globally. Oklahoma’s affordable and dependable electrical grid also attracts other data center developers like Cerebras, Damac, and CoreWeave with Core Scientific, reflecting a growing trend in the state.

Governor Kevin Stitt emphasized the importance of “Behind the Meter” initiatives to ensure adequate energy for large-scale data centers and AI facilities. These measures are critical for maintaining competitiveness and providing sustainable energy solutions for modern data processing needs.

Google’s new AI data center in Stillwater signifies a substantial investment aimed at leveraging the city’s economic potential and skilled workforce. This project promises to enhance local community services and infrastructure while positioning Google as a leader in AI data processing, shaping the future of data centers and technology in the region.
