A significant milestone in the tech landscape of Brazil was reached with the announcement of a new hyperscale data center campus in Leopoldina, Minas Gerais. The ambitious project is being spearheaded by venture capital and private equity firm Supernova Participações, alongside real estate development company Mapa Investimentos. This new development is slated to feature three state-of-the-art data centers and will see an initial investment of BRL300 million, which is approximately US$49.3 million. The first center, a 60MW, 30,000 square meter facility, is set to commence operations in 2026. Upon completion, the entire project is expected to reach an impressive 200MW capacity. This initiative aims to not only enhance data processing capabilities in the region but also to stimulate the local economy by generating numerous job opportunities.
In addition to driving technological progress, the project is also seen as a potential magnet for attracting businesses seeking efficient and secure data solutions. Though the end customer for this massive infrastructure has yet to be specified, discussions are ongoing to secure a key anchor tenant that will utilize the facility’s advanced capabilities. The economic implications of such an endeavor have not gone unnoticed. The Secretary of State for Economic Development, Fernando Passalio, emphasized Minas Gerais’ commitment to innovation, citing this year’s budget of BRL472.2 million, about US$77.5 million, in innovation investment.
João Paulo Braga, CEO of Invest Minas, further highlighted the importance of the project. He believes that the data center campus will play a pivotal role in attracting companies that prioritize both efficiency and security in their data operations. The endeavor aligns with a broader trend of substantial investments aimed at bolstering data center infrastructure. These efforts are crucial not only for technological advancements but also for economic growth and resilience. As the development progresses, it promises to place Minas Gerais on the map as a key player in the rapidly evolving technological environment.
