In a bold move aimed at addressing the burgeoning needs of the media production industry, Broadcast Management Group (BMG) has unveiled a pioneering Cloud Broadcast Network Operations Center (NOC) located in Washington, D.C. This state-of-the-art facility signifies a critical step in BMG’s response to unprecedented business growth and the evolving demands of modern broadcast technology. The new center promises to revolutionize production workflows by offering enhanced flexibility and scalability, essential for thriving in today’s increasingly dynamic media landscape. As technological advances continue to reshape the industry, BMG’s innovative facility sets a benchmark for future operations, enabling quicker adaptation to market shifts and technological changes.

Pioneering Cloud Broadcast Solutions

BMG embarked on this transformative journey in March 2021, laying the groundwork for its trailblazing Cloud Broadcast Center. The initiative included the design and construction of a fleet of Remote Integration Model (REMI) mobile units, showcasing a strategic pivot toward centralized technology and decentralized production teams. This evolution mirrors a broader industry trend where broadcast equipment manufacturers transition to Software as a Service (SaaS) business models, posing complexities for ownership and operation. By offering scalable services that better align with client demand, BMG’s Cloud Broadcast Network Operations Center presents a compelling solution to these challenges. The NOC is designed to cater to the needs of diverse clientele, ensuring they can access top-tier production capabilities without the burden of extensive infrastructure investments.

An integral component of BMG’s development is the comprehensive new facility in Washington, D.C., which began renovation in August. The facility encompasses administrative offices, insert studios, technical facilities, and event production spaces, alongside a systems integration build area and parking for mobile units. By early the following year, BMG had installed cutting-edge technology to support the wide-ranging operational needs. Key features include a data center, master control, advanced media asset management, and multiple production control rooms. The facility is equipped to broadcast in 1080P HDR and 5.1 surround sound, and its infrastructure is prepared for a seamless transition to 4K should demand dictate. Connectivity with BMG’s Spoke facilities in New York City and Las Vegas further enhances operational efficiency, streamlining processes for local talent booking, broadcasting, audio mixing, and more. By April, the center was fully operational, broadcasting live content, marking a new phase in BMG’s technological capabilities.

Cutting-Edge Technologies and Capabilities

To ensure robust performance, BMG has incorporated several key technologies into the new operations center. The system’s backbone is the Evertz EQX router, which facilitates 1100×1100 frame configurations, adaptable for SDI, 2110, and 4K inputs. Integrated within the router is a Multiviewer that initially hosts up to 32 simultaneous views, indicative of the facility’s advanced monitoring capabilities. For primary control rooms, BMG opted for Grass Valley K-Frame switchers with Kayenne panels, complemented by Grass Valley LDX 135 Native IP cameras known for high sensitivity and versatility in diverse environments. These choices enhance BMG’s existing camera fleet, bolstering remote workflow capabilities between mobile units and the NOC. Additionally, some control rooms feature Ross Acuity 4 ME switchers, reflecting BMG’s commitment to using premier equipment across the board. Furthermore, BMG utilizes the Grass Valley AMPP (Agile Media Processing Platform) for media management and master control, reinforcing its dedication to scalable and high-performance workflows. This virtualized, open media production platform enhances live production, content management, and distribution capabilities, ensuring alignment with BMG’s overarching business model. For virtual set production, BMG applies Zero Density technology, underscoring its innovative approach. The center also offers an extensive array of transmission options including LiveU, TVU, Haivision, NDI, LTN, Harmonic, Zixi, and SRT, with LiveU LU 810 and 4000s configured for optimal performance and low latency.

Strategic Vision and Future Developments

Under the leadership of CEO Todd Mason, Broadcast Management Group remains resolute in delivering premier production services through its transition to cloud-based infrastructure. This strategy offers numerous benefits, from reducing capital expenditures and enhancing scalability, to accelerating production market entry and minimizing environmental impact. The cloud infrastructure enables access to top-tier creative and technical talent globally, allowing lower production costs without sacrificing quality. Potential beneficiaries of BMG’s advanced infrastructure include broadcast networks, OTT networks, fast channels, Fortune 500 companies, and government agencies, all poised to gain from BMG’s forward-thinking approach.

Additionally, the company plans further expansion with two large broadcast studios. These facilities, set to become the largest independent studios in the Mid-Atlantic, will include green rooms, makeup areas, and newsrooms tailored for production teams. Such an addition caters to both daily and weekly live or live-to-tape broadcasts, further strengthening BMG’s market position. These developments are indicative of BMG’s commitment to industry-leading innovation and underline its strategic vision for media production excellence.

A Paradigm Shift in Media Production

Broadcast Management Group (BMG) has made a strategic move to meet the growing demands of the media production industry by launching an innovative Cloud Broadcast Network Operations Center in Washington, D.C. This cutting-edge facility represents a significant milestone in BMG’s strategic response to exceptional business expansion and the ever-changing needs of contemporary broadcast technology. Designed to revolutionize media production processes, the center offers increased flexibility and scalability, crucial for success in today’s fast-paced media environment. As technology continues to transform the industry landscape, BMG’s state-of-the-art facility sets a new standard for future operations, allowing for rapid adaptation to changes in both the market and technology. This innovative approach not only meets the current needs of the industry but also provides a forward-thinking solution that anticipates future trends and challenges, solidifying BMG’s position as a leader in broadcast technology innovation.
