Unraveling the Mystery of Unexplainable AI: The Evolution, Challenges, and Pursuit of Transparent Artificial Intelligence

Since the 20th century and even up to the present, the idea of conscious entities other than humans has been a popular theme in science fiction. However, this concept is not new as it has been around for millennia. The notion of machines having human-like consciousness has fascinated the world for a long time, and the current development in artificial intelligence (AI) has made this notion closer to reality than ever before.

Changes in the Concepts Surrounding AI as We Enter a New Phase

As AI technology continues to evolve, so does the meaning of the term “AI.” Currently, AI refers to computer algorithms that utilize enormous databases to generate predictions or responses without explicitly being programmed on how to do so. This next phase of development is fast approaching with the rise of what is called “black box” AI. Such systems are impossible to explain or interpret, making it hard for humans to trust them as their decision-making process is inscrutable.

Limitations of Various AI Tools in Displaying Consciousness

While current AI tools have evolved to respond like humans, many of them cannot exhibit consciousness. For instance, large language models that have been developed to respond to natural language in a way that appears human-like provide answers and responses based on enormous databases built through machine learning. While these systems can be impressive, they are not conscious or capable of understanding abstract concepts.

The rise of “black box” AI

In contrast to conventional AI models that have been programmed and trained explicitly, black box AI models are designed to learn independently from vast datasets. Consequently, the programming and training procedures involved are unexplainable, making it difficult to gain insight into their decision-making process. While these systems may produce accurate results, they are difficult to trust since their decision-making method is inscrutable.

Risks associated with Unexplainable AI

As the development of AI continues to progress, several challenges are beginning to emerge, particularly in utilizing unexplainable and incomprehensible systems. One of the biggest dangers is the risks inherent in using prompt-response systems, which may generate entirely inappropriate responses, especially when controlling vital systems.

Examples of risks from unexplainable AI in various contexts

Unexplainable AI poses significant risks in different contexts. For instance, in a healthcare environment, doctors may encounter dangerous situations if AI systems prompt incorrect decisions. In a factory, relying on incomprehensible AI to control machinery could lead to catastrophic damage. The same situation can occur on the world stage, as these systems may generate unwanted conflicts.

Acknowledgement of the Importance of Defining and Understanding AI

To forestall these risks, Fabian Wahler and Michael Neubert, in their work published in the International Journal of Teaching and Case Studies, emphasized the importance of understanding and defining AI in its various forms. They argue that the ambiguity surrounding AI concepts makes it difficult for both academics and practitioners to trust AI systems. Therefore, in the next phase of AI development, understanding and defining these concepts is critical.

A proposed definition of Explainable AI

With the ambiguities surrounding AI, Wahler and Neubert have proposed a definition of explainable AI that would help increase transparency and understanding of AI systems. Explainable AI aims to improve trust in these systems by making them more transparent, interpretable, and understandable to human users. This definition seeks to eliminate ambiguity while ensuring that AI systems are accurate, dependable, and reliable.

Increasing Trust and Reliability in Decision Making through Explainable AI

By emphasizing the importance of explainable AI, researchers can improve the accuracy and reliability of decision-making systems. In doing so, they can alleviate some of the concerns surrounding unexplainable systems that could make it difficult for humans to trust AI. Increased transparency and interpretability would help detect and fix biases and errors in AI algorithms that could lead to unintended or undesirable outcomes. In this way, explainable AI can improve trust in AI systems and promote human confidence in their decision-making capabilities.

The concepts surrounding AI continue to evolve as technology advances and becomes ever more complex. While the idea of AI systems with human-like consciousness may be long-standing, new developments in AI such as black box AI pose significant risks. To address these challenges, understanding and defining the terminology surrounding AI is essential. By improving clarity and interpretability, we can make AI more comprehensible and reliable. Therefore, the development of AI must prioritize explainable AI to foster trust and confidence in AI systems.
