Ukraine Investigates Possible Data Breach After Cyber Attack on Registries

In a significant development highlighting the ongoing cybersecurity threats faced by state institutions, a recent cyberattack on Ukraine’s state registries, attributed to Russian hackers, has prompted an extensive investigation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU). This attack led to the suspension of the Unified and State Registries, both managed by the Ministry of Justice, raising serious concerns about potential data breaches and the integrity of the nation’s digital infrastructure. Volodymyr Karastelyov, the acting head of the SSU’s Cyber Security Department, confirmed during a press conference that a detailed cyber investigation is currently in progress. The primary focus of the investigation is to determine whether any sensitive data was compromised during the breach.

Vice Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna also addressed the incident, noting that while initial reports did not confirm any data leakage, authorities have taken precautions to ensure that all registry information has been securely backed up. She assured the public that the backed-up data would be fully restored within two weeks, minimizing any potential disruption caused by the attack. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by state institutions in safeguarding their digital assets against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The SSU’s investigation aims not only to uncover the full extent and impact of the breach but also to implement measures that will bolster the security and resilience of Ukraine’s digital systems moving forward.
