Nokia Extends Contracts to Boost Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa 5G Networks

Nokia has signed an extended contract with Taiwan Mobile to enhance its 5G network’s performance and capacity while simultaneously upgrading the 4G/LTE infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in Taiwan’s telecommunication advancements. This collaboration is set to provide a superior end-user experience for around 10 million Taiwan Mobile customers while equipping the network with 5G-Advanced capabilities. The agreement follows the merger of Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan Star last year and includes the deployment of Nokia’s 5G AirScale portfolio in Taiwan for the first time.

Under the terms of this contract, Nokia will deliver next-generation AirScale baseband solutions, featuring Habrok 32 and Osprey 32 Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products, all operating on the ReefShark System-on-Chip technology. This initiative also aims to modernize thousands of LTE sites, promoting Taiwan Mobile’s sustainability goals by boosting energy efficiency. Nokia’s IPAA+ solution will play a crucial role in deploying additional antennas in densely populated urban regions, ensuring robust connectivity.

To further cement its commitment to superior network performance, Taiwan Mobile will also deploy Nokia’s carrier aggregation (CA) technology. This CA technology merges radio spectrum to dramatically enhance data rates, throughput, capacity, and overall performance. This growing partnership underscores Taiwan Mobile’s dedication to offering high-quality 5G experiences and supporting over 1 million IoT devices across its network. In a statement, Jamie Lin, President of Taiwan Mobile, emphasized that the collaboration seeks to guarantee excellent connectivity in both urban and rural areas, benefitting a wide array of customers in the 5G era.

Complementing the contract with Taiwan Mobile, Nokia has entered a separate one-year extension agreement with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) to upgrade its 5G network across central and southern Taiwan. This project aims to boost performance, capacity, and energy efficiency while laying the groundwork for CHT’s evolution into a 5G-Advanced network.

Deployment for these transformative projects is already underway, with work expected to continue over the next twelve months. Both agreements demonstrate Nokia’s steadfast commitment to advancing telecom infrastructure in Taiwan, amplifying energy efficiency and sustainability in pursuit of environmental goals.

Overall, Nokia’s recent engagements in Taiwan center on modernizing and improving telecom networks through cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices. The overall trend signals a shift towards higher network efficiency, capacity, and user experience, aligning with broader objectives of sustainability and technical progress in telecom infrastructure.
