Individuals also tend to perceive profiles or people expressing high levels of outrage as more credible, further compounding the problem by infusing greater perceived trustworthiness into sources of misinformation, regardless of their accuracy or integrity.

Social media algorithms play a significant role in exacerbating the spread of misinformation by prioritizing and amplifying content that elicits strong emotional reactions, particularly moral outrage. These algorithms are designed to maximize user engagement, often elevating posts that provoke intense emotions to higher visibility within users’ feeds. As a result, misleading content that induces moral outrage becomes more prominent and widely circulated. A recent investigation by the Center for Countering Digital Hate underscores this issue, revealing that modifications to X’s algorithm increased visibility for right-leaning accounts. This, in turn, contributed to the dissemination of false information, such as dubious claims surrounding the US presidential election.
