The launch of MobiFone’s 5G mobile services marks a significant milestone in Vietnam’s technological landscape. As the third telecom provider in the country to roll out 5G, MobiFone initially targets major city centers, with plans for nationwide expansion. Operating on the 3.800-3.900 MHz frequency band and supporting both 5G NSA and 5G SA architectures, the service promises speeds up to 1.5 Gbps, significantly faster than 4G. Existing 4G users with compatible smartphones can seamlessly transition to 5G without changing SIM cards, enhancing user experience. This development aims to boost the national economy and digital transformation efforts.

Early 5G Adoption and Economic Impact

Since launching 5G at the end of 2024, Vietnam has seen rapid progress in adoption rates and coverage. By early 2025, Viettel had amassed 5.5 million 5G subscribers, while VNPT expanded its 5G coverage to 63 provinces, serving around 3 million users. MobiFone is also positioning itself to support national economic growth through accelerated 5G commercialization. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the necessity of mastering 5G technology to achieve at least 8% economic growth by 2025. The rollout of 5G in Vietnam is expected to contribute significantly to various sectors, including industrial manufacturing, public administration, and IT, with the GSMA projecting a global economic contribution of over USD 930 billion by 2030.

To support 5G infrastructure, the National Assembly has allocated funds to assist telecom companies with rapid network expansion. Companies deploying at least 20,000 5G base stations by the end of 2025 are eligible for funding, which covers up to 15% of equipment costs. These efforts are aimed at enhancing digital transformation, technological innovation, and economic competitiveness. MobiFone’s new 5G services promise to play a crucial role in these national objectives, positioning Vietnam as a regional technology leader and an attractive investment destination.

Nationwide Expansion and 5G Benefits

The initial launch of MobiFone’s 5G services in major city centers is just the beginning of a more comprehensive plan. MobiFone plans to expand its 5G network nationwide, aiming to cover rural and remote areas, ultimately ensuring that the benefits of 5G technology are accessible to all citizens. This expansion is expected to drive significant digital and economic growth across the country. Beyond faster internet speeds, MobiFone’s 5G enables enterprise-level solutions, including over 100 tailored products such as AI solutions for smart tourism, traffic management, and private networks for industrial enterprises like Vicem Hoang Mai Cement.

The introduction of 5G also supports Vietnam’s broader economic goals. The government has recognized the critical role of advanced technologies in achieving sustainable growth. Increased internet speeds and connectivity offered by 5G are seen as key enablers for the digital economy, fostering innovation, and improving productivity across various sectors. Industries such as manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and education stand to benefit from the enhanced connectivity, resulting in improved services and customer experiences.

Future Prospects and Technological Advancements

The introduction of MobiFone’s 5G mobile services is a major milestone in Vietnam’s technology sector. As the third telecom company in the country to implement 5G, MobiFone is initially focusing on major urban centers with plans to expand the service nationwide. Utilizing the 3.800-3.900 MHz frequency band and supporting both 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) and 5G Standalone (SA) architectures, the service promises speeds reaching up to 1.5 Gbps, which is significantly faster than current 4G. One notable feature is that existing 4G users who have compatible smartphones can switch to 5G without needing to change their SIM cards, which enhances user convenience and experience. This launch is not only aimed at improving mobile connectivity but also at driving the national economy forward and supporting Vietnam’s digital transformation initiatives. The rollout of this advanced technology is expected to open up new opportunities in various sectors, encouraging innovation and economic growth throughout the country.
