Microsoft’s Mount Pleasant Data Center Campus Receives Site Plan Approval

Microsoft’s ambitious project to build a state-of-the-art data center campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, has reached a significant milestone as its site plan is officially approved. The tech giant aims to establish a cutting-edge facility to support its growing cloud computing operations. With this latest development, Microsoft is one step closer to bringing its vision to fruition.

Project Overview

The Mount Pleasant data center project was first announced in March, and groundbreaking work began in August, showcasing the company’s commitment to its timely execution. Since then, the project has been making steady progress, laying the foundation for what promises to be a landmark facility in the area.

Construction progress

Currently, the construction work is focused on the foundation, indicating that the project is well underway. The campus will comprise a total of three buildings, boasting an impressive combined area of 1.11 million sq ft (103,122 sqm). The meticulous planning and attention to detail demonstrate Microsoft’s dedication to creating a world-class data center that will meet the demands of its ever-expanding cloud services.

Data center specifications

The centerpiece of the campus will be the two data centers, towering over the landscape at heights of 61.5 ft and 26.5 ft respectively. It is noteworthy that the planned data centers are significantly smaller in stature than the previously intended Foxconn manufacturing hub, which would have stood at an imposing 100 ft. These data centers will embody Microsoft’s commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable technology, ensuring responsible resource usage while maintaining optimal performance.

Campus location and design

Situated on a sprawling 300-acre property, construction will primarily take place in the southern portion, encompassing 215 acres. Microsoft has meticulously contemplated the campus design, with a focus on environmental considerations and minimizing potential disturbances to the surrounding areas. In efforts to mitigate noise and preserve the surrounding tranquility, the company plans to construct a 30 ft wall on the southeastern end of the property to house the cooling equipment for the data centers. This wall will not only act as a barrier but also blend seamlessly into the landscape. Landscaping elements, such as trees and a pond, will further obscure the wall, enhancing the visual appeal of the site while ensuring that it remains in harmony with its surroundings.

Project timeline

Microsoft’s Mount Pleasant data center campus is a massive undertaking, requiring meticulous planning and execution. With construction already in progress, the project is expected to be completed by 2026. This comprehensive timeline recognizes the magnitude and complexity of the project while allowing the necessary time to ensure all aspects are brought to fruition seamlessly.

The approval of the site plan for Microsoft’s Mount Pleasant data center campus marks a significant step forward in the realization of this groundbreaking project. With construction well underway, the attention to detail, commitment to sustainability, and sensitivity to the local environment exemplify Microsoft’s dedication to excellence. As the campus takes shape, it holds the promise of becoming a technological hub that will bring jobs and opportunities to the region while further bolstering the company’s role as a leading player in the cloud computing industry.
