KT Cloud has taken a significant step in expanding its data center operations by being appointed as the designated operator for the new Guro Data Center in Seoul, South Korea. Featuring an impressive 30MW capacity, the center is strategically positioned in Gae Bong Dong, marking another major development in South Korea’s rapidly growing data infrastructure sector. This decision stems from a change in contract, authorizing KT Cloud to oversee the design, construction, and management of the facility. Notably, the company plans to secure 15 percent of the center’s capacity to cater to its operational requirements. Originally initiated by Lotte Engineering & Construction, the project saw a transition in primary contractor responsibilities to Capstone Asset Management due to financial challenges. The development is now being executed by SK Eco Plant, with construction having commenced in February of this year. It carries a significant projected cost, underscoring the scale and ambition of the project.

The Journey of Guro Data Center’s Development

Stretching over 19,225 square meters, the Guro Data Center is a bold initiative with an estimated investment of 130 billion won, roughly $914 million. Capstone Asset Management has significantly influenced the project, contributing 105 billion won, or about $738.2 million. Completion is slated for April 2028, showcasing South Korea’s high investment in data infrastructure. KT Cloud aims to upgrade its capabilities following its 2022 split from KT Corp., notably expanding with the 26MW Gasan IDC in Seoul’s Geumcheon District. KT Cloud plans to further its artificial intelligence proficiency this year, enhancing both AI and data infrastructure. This effort positions South Korea as a key player in global tech, impacting businesses and consumers alike. The development of advanced centers like Guro signifies a dedication to technology progression, ensuring readiness for future digital demands. This trend reflects a broader movement of major firms to bolster the country’s standing in the tech world.
