In recent developments, Edged, a prominent technology company, has announced significant changes to its planned data center campus in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Initially approved a year ago, the ambitious project comprised two towering buildings designed to reach 80 feet and cover a total of 900,000 square feet of space on what was then undeveloped land. This large-scale endeavor has undergone notable amendments that reflect both strategic efficiency gains and a response to evolving customer needs. Edged has decided to reduce both the scale and height of the proposed structures significantly. Each building’s footprint is now slated to be 285,445 square feet, with the height adjusted to a more modest 36 feet and three inches. These revisions aim to optimize site design and operational effectiveness while maintaining the original goal of a high-performing, sustainable infrastructure.

Strategic Shifts for Customer-Centric Design

The decision to pare down the initially grand design aligns with Edged’s broader strategy to customize solutions to meet specific customer requirements effectively. By adopting smaller building sizes, Edged intends to enhance the overall quality of the infrastructure without compromising the data center’s capacity or functionality. The reduced dimensions are part of a comprehensive approach to ensure that each component of the data campus enhances operational performance. These modifications include the installation of two owner-operated substations. This step represents a departure from the original plan, which involved establishing a substation operated by MidAmerican Energy. By taking control of the power sources, Edged can offer a level of reliability and efficiency tailored specifically to its operational model. Such self-contained power solutions underscore the company’s commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable performance.

Commitment to Performance and Sustainability

Although the data center’s physical structure has undergone changes, it maintains a strong operational capacity of 200 megawatts. This steady capacity reflects Edged’s commitment to sustainable high performance, ensuring the infrastructure can support both current and future computing needs. The strategic significance of choosing the site for the data campus is noteworthy. Situated near Omaha, Nebraska, the location was initially considered for a logistics park that never materialized. This new data campus not only benefits from its strategic position but also enhances local infrastructure. Edged’s previous projects in Des Moines and other parts of the U.S. showcase a pattern of sustainable technology-driven development. Mitch Fonseca, Edged’s COO, highlights these updates as vital for delivering a future-ready technological solution. Edged’s focus on efficiency and customer-centered designs marks a trend in evolving data infrastructure, offering insights for tech companies aiming at large-scale ventures and setting benchmarks for sustainable development in the industry.
