India’s digital landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the rapid adoption of 5G technology, positioning it to soon outpace 4G usage. According to Nokia’s annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, the exponential growth in video consumption, social media engagement, and streaming services is propelling 5G traffic to surpass 4G within the first quarter. This shift is attributed to the swift expansion of high-speed networks and a burgeoning ecosystem of 5G devices. By the same projections, the average monthly mobile data consumption per user has reached 27.5 GB, with 5G users consuming up to 40 GB. By 2027, 5G data traffic is anticipated to overwhelmingly exceed 4G, driven by a myriad of factors, including the widespread availability of 5G devices and enhanced network infrastructure.

Impact of 5G Device Proliferation

The 5G device landscape is rapidly evolving, with active numbers expected to double to 271 million by 2026. By 2027, nearly 90% of smartphones needing replacement will be 5G-capable from brands like Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and RealMe. These brands have shifted focus to 5G to meet the high market demand for video, social media, streaming, and gaming. Increased data consumption in Category B and C non-metro telecom circles underscores this trend, with 5G usage growing 3.4 and 3.2 times respectively.

Metro areas also show significant growth, with 5G now making up 43% of mobile broadband data, up from 20%. This surge highlights a nationwide shift in mobile broadband habits, further backed by a 19.5% annual growth rate in data consumption over the last five years. Moreover, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) has greatly increased data usage, with FWA users consuming over 12 times more data than typical mobile users, driven by new services for homes and businesses.

India’s swift 5G deployment covers 82% of the population and 99% of districts, marking one of the fastest global expansions. This shift from 4G to 5G reflects changes in digital consumption, backed by ongoing technological and telecom support, positioning India at the forefront of digital evolution. The evidence points to a transformative shift, with 5G redefining connectivity standards, speed, and user experience. Continued data usage growth and widespread 5G device adoption signal that India’s tech landscape is set for significant advancements, poised to set benchmarks for future innovations.
