How Will Nokia and Taiwan Mobile’s Partnership Transform 5G Networks?

Nokia’s recent decision to extend its partnership with Taiwan Mobile signifies a major leap toward enhancing the telecom infrastructure in Taiwan. This collaboration, aimed at optimizing Taiwan Mobile’s 5G network performance and upgrading its 4G/LTE network, comes on the heels of Taiwan Mobile’s merger with Taiwan Star. By integrating these systems, they are well-positioned to usher Taiwan Mobile into the 5G-Advanced era. For the first time in Taiwan, Nokia will supply components from its 5G AirScale portfolio, including advanced baseband solutions and powerful radios driven by ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, highlighting the innovative edge of this partnership.

The overarching goal of this initiative is not merely to upgrade technology but to substantially modernize thousands of existing LTE sites. This enhancement is crucial for improving energy efficiency and achieving Taiwan Mobile’s sustainability objectives. A key element in this upgrade process is Nokia’s IPAA+ solution, which enables efficient antenna installations in densely populated urban areas, thereby optimizing space usage. Additionally, the introduction of carrier aggregation technology will combine radio spectrums to deliver faster data rates and improved capacity, greatly enhancing connectivity and addressing the differing needs of both urban and rural customers.

In their previous collaboration, Nokia facilitated the deployment of over 3,000 new 5G cell sites for Taiwan Mobile. Jamie Lin, President of Taiwan Mobile, emphasized that the partnership will be crucial in delivering an upgraded 5G experience to their 10 million customers. Echoing this sentiment, Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, hailed the collaboration, particularly highlighting the energy-efficient AirScale portfolio’s contribution to minimizing environmental impact while pursuing broader sustainability goals.

Ultimately, this bolstered partnership primarily focuses on boosting network performance, expanding capacity, and aligning with sustainability initiatives. This move marks a significant milestone in advancing Taiwan Mobile’s technological infrastructure and underscores Nokia’s pivotal role in steering this transformative journey.
