Inflection AI has recently formed a partnership with the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) to enable users of its Pi AI assistant to export their data, marking a strategic shift towards prioritizing data portability in the AI sector. This collaboration comes on the heels of a significant staffing change, where several co-founders of Inflection AI were hired by Microsoft, prompting the company to pivot from consumer-oriented services to enterprise solutions.

This partnership with DTI, a non-profit organization supported by technology giants such as Apple, Meta, and Google, allows users to export their chat history with the Pi assistant. The exported data will be formatted in a clear, documented, and plain-text searchable manner, free from any restrictive licenses, ensuring it can be easily used in the future. This new feature will permit seamless data transfer to any large language model (LLM) that supports the format, including upcoming enterprise products from Inflection AI.

Even though Inflection AI is shifting its focus towards enterprise offerings, the company has confirmed that the Pi service will remain available for free, although with some limitations on message volumes. This strategy ensures that Inflection AI can continue to serve its consumer base while allocating the necessary resources for its enterprise-focused initiatives.

Looking forward, DTI plans to improve import mechanisms across generative AI tools and promote industry dialogue to develop a sustainable data model for portability. Eventually, these efforts will be integrated into DTI’s open-source Data Transfer Project.
