How Can Warehouse Insight Improve Your Assembly Order Process?

The effective assembly of items in a warehouse environment requires the right tools and processes, especially when dealing with a plethora of components. The Warehouse Insight app, seamlessly integrated with Business Central, facilitates and optimizes the assembly order process. Whether you’re working in a location without mandatory bins and without a need for a separate pick document, or in an advanced warehouse with mandatory bins, the Warehouse Insight app streamlines operations, improving accuracy and efficiency. This article walks you through the step-by-step instructions for both scenarios. Let’s take a closer look at how Warehouse Insight can transform your warehouse assembly order process.

Create Assembly Order for Location Without Mandatory Bins

To begin the process, you first need to create an assembly order in the Assembly Orders Page. Navigate to this page and click on the “New” button to initiate the order. Select item #1047 for the Plant Potting Kit and then input the quantity to assemble two units. Following this, fill in the relevant Posting Date, Start Date, and End Date. Upon entering the quantity, the lines will automatically populate with the components based on the assembly BOM. The quantity field in the lines is calculated considering both the quantity field on the header and the quantity per field in the lines.

Next, enter the location and click on the “Update Unit Cost” button. This updates the unit cost field on the header, calculated from the unit cost of components on the lines. Once everything is set, release the assembly order so that warehouse associates can process it further. This step ensures that the order is ready to be handled efficiently on the warehouse floor, reducing delays and mistakes in the picking process.

Process Orders with Mobile Device

As a warehouse associate, your primary task is to process these assembly orders. Log in to the Warehouse Insight App on your mobile handheld device and click on the “Assembly Orders” icon to open it. Depending on your setup in the Device Configuration, you might only see released assembly orders. If open documents need to be seen, request the warehouse manager or IT administrator to toggle the “Show All Documents” field to “Yes” in the Warehouse Insight Device Configuration Page from Business Central.

Additionally, the “Assign Document” field can be set up in the Device Configuration Page to automatically assign documents to the associate who opens them. In the lookup list, scan the assembly document barcode or select the record to open a specific assembly order. Since this location does not have mandatory bins, the bins column will be blank, and you won’t be required to scan a bin. Based on the document, start picking the items and place them in the designated assembly area. Scan the barcode of item #1043 and update the quantity you are picking. The open quantity and quantity to consume will be updated for each line accordingly.

Pick Items and Update Quantities

Continue by scanning all other items and updating the quantity you need to pick and consume. Once done, all item component lines will be updated with open quantity as zero. The remaining field in the header indicates that two units of the Plant Potting Kits need to be assembled. The process of physically assembling and packaging the two Plant Potting Kits follows. After assembly, select the “Output” menu option.

Update the quantity with two units of Plant Potting Kits that you have assembled or finished and click okay to post. This operation will post the assembly order in Business Central, updating the quantity of Plant Potting Kits and the relevant components. You’ll notice that the “Quantity on Hand” field will reflect an addition of two more units. Additionally, the Item Ledger entry will be updated to reflect the two assembled quantities for assembly order #1261 that was posted.

Create Assembly Order for Location With Mandatory Bins

For locations that require mandatory bins and a separate pick document, the process will slightly differ. Navigate to the Assembly Orders Page and click on the “New” button to initiate a new order. Select item #1047 to assemble the Plant Potting Kit, input the quantity to assemble two units, and fill in the relevant Posting Date, Start Date, and End Date. Upon entering the quantity, lines will populate with components as per the assembly BOM. The quantity field in the lines is then calculated considering both the quantity field on the header and the quantity per field in the lines.

Enter the location and click on the “Update Unit Cost” button to refresh the unit cost field on the header. This calculation is based on the unit cost of components on the lines. Once ready, release the assembly order. Given that the location requires picks, the next step involves creating a pick document for the picker to gather components of the assembly item and place them in the designated assembly area.

Create and Review Pick Document

Pick documents can be created either from the Assembly Order Page by clicking on the “Create Warehouse Pick” action from the warehouse menu, or from the Pick Worksheet by executing the “Get Warehouse Document” action followed by the “Create Pick” action. When reviewing the created pick document, notice that it suggests two actions for each item component line. The first action involves taking the component from bin #W-02-0001, where it resides, while the second action involves placing it in bin #W-07-0004, as set in the “To-Assembly Bin Code” field on the location card.

As a warehouse associate, you’ll be responsible for picking the components from the respective bins and transferring them to the assembly area. Log in to the Warehouse Insight App with a Device Configuration Code mapped to the Orange Location. Click on the “Pick” icon to open the app. Scan the pick document barcode or select the record to open the document. Note that the document is not assigned, so you can open and start executing it.

Execute Picking Instructions and Assemble

Based on the pick instructions, head to the designated bin #W-02-0001 and scan the bin barcode. With the scanned bin now showing at the bottom, proceed by scanning the item barcode next. Scan the barcode of item #1043 and enter the pick quantity. Given that the bins for the other items are the same, continue scanning each item barcode as you pick them. The “Open Qty.” will be updated to zero on all lines once all item barcodes are scanned.

Register the pick to move the components from bin #W-02-0001 to the assembly area bin #W-07-0004, as set in the “To-Assembly Bin Code” field on the location card. Along with picking, you may also be responsible for assembling the items. Open the Warehouse Insight app and click on the “Assembly” icon. Scan the assembly order barcode or select the record to open the document. With the components picked, assemble two units of the Plant Potting Kits in the assembly area as per the document instructions.
