Are UK Ecommerce Firms Missing Out on Cloud ERP Benefits?

A recent study has uncovered a paradox in the UK ecommerce sector: while a significant percentage of companies have adopted cloud or hybrid ERP systems, many admit to not leveraging these systems to their full potential. This revelation comes from the "UK Midmarket Ecommerce Report" by Forterro, detailing how 87% of UK ecommerce organizations use these advanced systems, yet 64% acknowledge that they are not fully exploiting these capabilities. This underutilization presents a major challenge, particularly when considering the high stakes involved. Downtimes of these ERP systems can result in significant financial losses, averaging GBP £26,580 per day. Furthermore, such downtimes have been reported to negatively impact staff productivity and tarnish company reputations, with 50% and 47% of respondents respectively citing these issues.

The Crucial Role of ERP Systems

David Coste of Forterro highlighted that ERP systems play a pivotal role in maintaining service excellence and differentiating companies in an increasingly competitive sector. Despite recognizing cloud ERP advantages such as ease of backup, high availability, and improved processing speed, many ecommerce firms find themselves constrained in fully embracing these benefits. Specifically, 41% of firms have identified ineffective cloud use as a significant barrier to adopting advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). This limitation is perplexing, considering the strategic edge both AI and IoT can provide in terms of business intelligence, automation, and operational efficiency.

Security emerges as a top priority for 43% of respondents, driven by a rise in cyber threats that have become increasingly sophisticated. Following closely behind are goals related to cost reduction (36%) and improving supply chain processes (32%). These priorities underscore the broader challenges faced by the industry, which extend beyond technological optimization to include responding to global economic and political uncertainties. With 40% of firms concerned about these uncertainties, maintaining a robust sales pipeline (39%) and managing talent retention and acquisition (36%) also emerge as significant hurdles.

Navigating Industry Challenges

Coste stressed that business leaders need to embrace technology, not just for boosting operational efficiency, but to unlock transformative potential as well. This technological adoption can address some of the industry’s most urgent issues, like delivering excellent service in the face of rising competition and shifting customer expectations. He passionately encouraged companies to see ERP systems as more than mere tools for managing daily tasks; they should be viewed as strategic assets that can drive innovation and market responsiveness. The importance of securing operations through advanced technology has never been more crucial, particularly in an ecommerce world rife with cyber threats and economic uncertainties.

Despite the impressive adoption rate of cloud ERP systems in the UK ecommerce sector, underutilization of these systems is a major concern. Many companies fail to fully exploit their ERP capabilities, thereby missing out on opportunities to boost efficiency, innovate, and stay competitive. Closing this gap could lead to substantial transformation, helping firms more effectively overcome industry challenges and leverage other technological advantages.
