In a significant move that underscores the expanding data center landscape, Aligned is set to make a notable impact at Quantum Frederick Park in Maryland. The company has received preliminary approval from Frederick County officials to develop three additional data centers, building on their existing facility situated on the vast 2,100-acre campus at 5601 Manor Woods Road. This expansion introduces 1,149,000 square feet of new construction to its current operations. Originally, Aligned aimed to create 3.3 million square feet of data center capacity at the site. However, progress was initially stymied by restrictions on diesel generators, which were capped at a 70MW limit. Recent regulatory changes in Maryland regarding backup generators have breathed new life into Aligned’s ambitious project, permitting the company to advance its development plans.

A New Era for Data Centers in Frederick County

Aligned’s renewed efforts aim to unlock the campus’s full capacity, targeting 264MW spread across four buildings. This initiative is part of a larger trend, with other major beneficiaries also marking significant gains at the site. Rowan Digital Infrastructure is establishing its presence by building eleven structures over three sites in the park. Meanwhile, Amazon plans to enter this competitive field with a formidable 258MW data center, powered by a striking lineup of 99 generators. The dynamics between Aligned, Rowan, and Amazon aren’t entirely clear, but together, they form a growing hub of cutting-edge technological infrastructure. Recently reduced regulatory barriers in Frederick County have markedly facilitated the surge in data center development. Previously hindered, the current climate is ripe for investment and innovation, prompting expansion from established organizations and inviting new contenders. With this favorable change, Frederick County is poised to become a critical node in the global data center network, highlighting a vision tailored to meet contemporary technological necessities.
