In an alarming development, an AI-powered presentation tool, Gamma, has been co-opted into sophisticated phishing attacks, casting a new light on the intersection of advanced technology and cybersecurity threats. Researchers at Abnormal Security have identified an intricate campaign where threat actors leverage Gamma’s longstanding legitimacy to deliver fake Microsoft portal links. Gamma, notable for generating detailed presentations using generative AI models, is being repurposed to deceive targets into believing an email is genuine. This creative misuse has allowed attackers to sidestep traditional detection measures, compromising accounts with unprecedented finesse.

The Crafty Use of Gamma in Phishing Attacks

The exploit begins with threat actors sending emails from legitimate but stolen accounts, which contain a seemingly benign call to action encouraging the recipient to view an embedded PDF. Clicking this “attachment” directs the victim to a Gamma presentation hosted on a legitimate Gamma webpage. This presentation skillfully mimics the branding of the impersonated organization, including a button like “View PDF,” linked to a subdomain echoing the impersonated company’s identity. The visually convincing elements significantly reduce the suspicion on the part of the recipient, tricking many into believing they are engaging with a trusted entity. Once the recipient clicks the call to action, they are redirected to a transitional page featuring a fake Microsoft logo and a Cloudflare bot-detection tool. Successfully completing the bot check leads them to a bogus Microsoft SharePoint login page, meticulously designed to harvest their credentials. The sophistication of the phishing campaign is further evident in its use of the adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) technique, wherein the attackers validate entered credentials in real-time, providing immediate feedback if they are incorrect. This interaction instills further trust in the fraudulent process, significantly enhancing the likelihood of successful deception.

Living-off-trusted-sites (LOTS) Techniques

Researchers have categorized this advanced threat under the “living-off-trusted-sites” (LOTS) attacks, a term for tactics where malicious content is hosted on legitimate sites, making detection exceedingly difficult. In this campaign, the malefactors’ use of legitimate email addresses and well-known products such as Gamma provides further camouflage. Key phishing indicators identified included generic calls to action, suspicious URLs, and occasional grammatical errors. However, the overall sophistication of this campaign makes it particularly challenging for untrained eyes to detect.

Piotr Wojtyla, the head of threat intelligence at Abnormal Security, highlighted the importance of trust in these phishing attacks. By replicating the expected user flow through Gamma presentations, generating authentic-looking spoofed screens, and even implementing fake CAPTCHA authentication processes, attackers can dramatically reduce suspicion. These meticulously crafted steps create a seamless and convincing experience, perpetuating the illusion of legitimacy.

Countermeasures and Enhanced Vigilance

In a worrisome twist, a sophisticated phishing campaign is exploiting Gamma, an AI-powered presentation tool, revealing new dimensions in the fight against cybersecurity threats. Experts at Abnormal Security have uncovered that cybercriminals are hijacking Gamma’s established credibility to orchestrate fake Microsoft portal links. Gamma is renowned for creating detailed presentations through generative AI models, but its misuse in these attacks has been striking. Attackers are cleverly using Gamma to craft emails that appear legitimate, thereby tricking recipients into trusting the content. This innovative exploitation allows hackers to bypass conventional detection systems with remarkable skill, leading to compromised accounts without raising immediate suspicion. The deceptive application of Gamma underscores the vulnerabilities in even the most trusted technologies when manipulated by malicious actors, highlighting the critical need for enhanced vigilance and advanced security measures in the face of evolving threats.

AI Recruitment Tools Invent and Reinforce Their Own Biases

When a recruiting algorithm selects a candidate not because of their skills but because it hallucinated a success pattern out of thin air, the fundamental promise of meritocratic automation begins to crumble. This shift marks a departure from the era when developers merely feared that machines would inherit human prejudices; today, the concern is that they are actively manufacturing their
