Edinburgh Trams to Launch Contactless Payment System

The City of Edinburgh Council is set to introduce a cutting-edge contactless payment system for its trams, offering unprecedented convenience and efficiency for passengers. Dubbed ‘Tap On and Tap Off,’ this new system will enable travelers to effortlessly begin and end their journeys using contactless cards or devices. Developed in partnership with the payment provider Flowbird, the contactless system is in its final testing phases, with an official launch imminent. Upon introduction, passengers within the City Zone will be subject to a standard single adult fare, while daily journeys will be capped at £5. Additionally, integration with Lothian Buses will allow seamless transfers with fares capped at the cost of a City Day ticket. For frequent travelers, a weekly cap of £24.50 has been established to prevent additional charges, ensuring a cost-effective travel experience throughout the week.

Enhanced Convenience and Modernization

Edinburgh Trams’ managing director, Lea Harrison, emphasized that launching services to Newhaven and investing in new technology are crucial for making trams more appealing to both residents and tourists. A major part of this upgrade involves replacing old tram stop validators with advanced contactless technology. Staff will also use new handheld devices to check passenger taps before boarding, streamlining the process and ensuring accurate fare calculations. Extensive testing is required to ensure reliability, but the system should be operational within weeks, marking a major milestone for Edinburgh’s public transport.

Passengers must tap off upon exiting to avoid a £7.90 fee for incomplete journeys, exclusive to trams and not Lothian Buses. This makes it essential for passengers to remember to adhere to this requirement to avoid extra charges. These advancements in ticketing and payments are set to be recognized at the CiTTi Awards in November, highlighting their significance in the UK’s transportation sector.
